Prof. Schemmer is a scientist who has devoted himself to both surgical oncology and transplant surgery. While he performs general, endocrine, upper and lower GI surgery his special interest is hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery including minimal invasive surgery. He began his academic career in 1994 at the University of Heidelberg and has been there professor and vice of chairman of the Department of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery, Germany from 2013 - 2016. In November 2016 he was appointed as chairman of the Dept. of Surgery, Division of Transplant Surgery, Medical University of Graz, Austria.
He published more than 300 papers and was honored with prestigious awards and degrees, i.e. Dr. h.c. and Prof. (hon.). Presently, he also is serving in various positions at scientific journals (associated editor, guest editor, board member) and is (honorary) members of various international surgical associations.
